Notes from mphoto 5 learning firey journal: During SAADE’s October meeting, there was a lot of talk about the Austin Mentor’s Program. Evidently, it’s an adjunct to SAADE, but a little apart. I don’t quite get it. Anyway, David Walker runs it and he has taken a liking to me and invited me to join a few others.

As I’ve now been “in the scene” for about six months, this is a great good fortune and good timing. This is really a new program. This is only the second year.  This time we get to spend about five hours with each of the assigned mentors, each of whom will teach us a single skill.

My schedule looks like this:

  • December 2001: fire play
  • January 2002: impact play—spanking, paddling, floggers
  • February; DM certification training + first aid
  • March: toybag basics
  • April: CBT + clips and clamps
  • May: electrical stimulation — violet wand and TENS
  • June: rope bondage
  • July: sensation play
  • August: submissives’ round-table
  • Sep: rough body play

(ADDED NOTE: David and I would go on to co-author and publish the first—and to this day the only—book on fire play. David had also co-founded SAADE, initially called: “School for Advanced American-style Dominants’ Education.”  It is an “education” club as opposed to GWNN, which remains a “play” club.  GWNN stands for “Group With No Name. You could be a member of this club without showing any ID. You could sign play party waivers with an “X.”

I had a very good experience in the Mentors Program. It enabled me to meet the most senior members of the Austin community right from the beginning of my BDSM life.  By the following October, I at least knew quite a bit about what I didn’t know, but knew who could bring me further along the path.)

NOTE: SAADE club meetings included a 60-90 minute demo or presentation. These were amazing events that discuss all sorts of topics that I’d never thought about. Erotic shaving? Basic rope bondage? Wrapping someone up in Saran Wrap? Spanking someone for erotic purposes?

At 58 years old, all this appeared to be occurring on a parallel universe.  I’d had zero exposure to anything but very vanilla sex prior to a year ago. I hadn’t been sexually curious to this point and I was brought up largely without kids my own age living in our neighborhood so I’d had no exposure to sexual options.

Since I’ve been trained to be an academic researcher, I decided that the obvious thing to do would be to read books and go to weekend BDSM conferences.

I read lots of books. But, there simply aren’t very many books in print. We have “SM-101” and “Screw the Roses” and “The Loving Dominant,” but not a whole lot beyond that.  I continued to find books as they came out: generally, I read them immediately.

Austin is well located for weekend BDSM conferences.  My “main club,” NLA-Austin, puts on its own weekend educational event and GWNN has its annual Bash. Up in Dallas, you have both Southplains Leather Fest and Beyond Vanilla.  Renee and I are/have been going to all four of them: we were sucking up knowledge at a very good rate.

The first year we attended Southplains, we took 100% “skills track” classes.  There were a bunch of classes in something called the “M/s track,” but those seemed to be for the gay guys who were dressed a little differently from the rest of us.

By the second year that we went up for Southplains, we at least knew that Master/salve existed and started taking those classes.

By the third year at Southplains, we only took the M/s classes.

I’d found my fit. The rest is history.

This is not a book that explains what BDSM is, this is a book that explains what BDSM is all about.

This is a book for people who are considering stepping into real time BDSM, and it is also a book for people who have been involved in the community for a while.

This book treats the world of BDSM as a culture unto itself and goes a long way to explaining the expectations, rules, and words that are common to this culture.

This book does not tell you how to use any implements (floggers, canes, etc), but it does explain why in the world you'd want to use such implements.

This is a must-have resource book for your kink library.
